STC Rochester at Summit

There are 11 members of STC Rochester attending Summit. That’s almost 15% of the chapter membership. Lisa Pietrangeli, Lori Meyer, and Ben Woelk are all presenting. (Ironically, all at 10 am on Wednesday, May 18th!)

Here’s their presentation schedule:

Wednesday, May 18th, 10 am

Lori Meyer is presenting “Editing Challenges in a 140-Character World” as part of the ” Technical Editing Progression: The Evolving Role of Editing.”

This progression highlights how editing continues to evolve and yet retain its core values. Specifically you’ll hear the presenters share their editing experiences in areas such as microblogging, style, format consistency, modular documentation, collaborative authoring, project tracking, peer reviews, video scripts, and simplicity.

Lisa Pietrangeli is presenting “Writing for Localization: Hands-On Tips and Best Practices.”

Decisions you make, from word choice to how much white space is available on your document page, affect the localization process, translation accuracy, reader accessibility, overall cost, and time-to-market. This workshop is a hands-on approach to authoring and design for an international audience.

Ben Woelk is taking part in the Lightning Talks, a series of nine five-minute presentations given in a one-hour session. Each presentation will contain 20 slides, advanced automatically at 15-second intervals. Ben’s topic is “Ten Ways to Shockproof Your Use of Social Media.”

This session features a series of “Lightning Talks”—five-minute
talks on topics of interest to technical communicators. Each speaker gets 20 slides, displayed for 15 seconds per slide. Timing is strictly enforced. Expect presentations that are insightful, thought-provoking, humorous, and possibly controversial. Expect to see oratory skills tested, and expect to have fun.

Sunday, May 15th, 10 am

At Leadership Day, Ben Woelk is presenting “Communications Liftoff: How to Rocket Your Community to the Stars.”

Marketing communications are foundational to increasing your community’s reach and energizing your fan base. This session will explain how to create a social media-based community marketing plan and show how Rochester leveraged higher ed resources to identify new opportunities and go after new markets.

The Leadership Day presentation will be webcast at ~1 pm EDT on Sunday, May 15th. You can find registration information at http://summit.stc.org/portions-of-leadership-day-to-be-webcast/
