Careers in Demand

On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, the Monroe Boces WEMOCO Career and Technical Education Center held Careers in Demand Day at the Gates-Chili High School. The event exposed students to careers in five areas of high demand: information technology, advanced manufacturing, skilled trades, culinary and tourism, and healthcare. The Rochester Chapter was asked to find presenters who could speak to students about technical writing and careers in the field.

Education manager Carmel Priore-Garlock recruited John Lukes and Katie Bush to represent the chapter at the event. John and Katie reported that they spoke to about a dozen students in two groups about the field of technical communication and about the Rochester Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). They covered the breadth and depth of technical communication, its history, practical advice about career opportunities, benefits of being a student volunteer at the annual Spectrum conference, and the Rochester Chapter mentoring program. John and Katie also provided handouts for the students. In behalf of the Council and the chapter, Carmel extends thanks to Katie and John for representing us at Careers in Demand Day at the Gates-Chili High School. If the event becomes a regular one, the chapter hopes to participate again and the chapter also welcomes invitations to participate in career events at other schools.
