8-12-week Contract Tech. Writing Opportunity in Syracuse NY

I am currently looking for a Technical Writer for a short-term, on-site contract for 8-12 weeks in Syracuse.  The candidate must have experience with FrameMaker.

Job Description:

Research and write technical literature required for the sale, installation, and operation of a variety of commercial products. Responsibilities include editing and writing technical publications according to department style manual and standards; gathering information from sources in Marketing and Engineering; evaluating data and artwork; and reviewing proofs for accuracy.

Education: BA/BS degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or Engineering.

 Experience: 3+ years experience in writing technical manuals; working knowledge of electronic publishing and graphics production.

Job Summary:
Prepare procedures by gathering background information; writing initial and final procedure drafts; performing editorial functions to ensure that procedures are understandable, and that they conform to Company, departmental, industry, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and INPO writing guidelines. Coordinates the review, revision, and approval of procedures. Works closely with Technical/Functional experts while ensuring technical/functional adequacy of procedures during development. Presents procedures to Plant Operations Review Committee (PORC) for review as required or facilitates the Quality or other Safety reviews. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Use departmental processes to complete the following types of assignments:
  • Research technical content related to O&M manuals. Synthesize engineering documents and descriptions in concise, understandable explanations.
  • Write accurate, detailed operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals used to support hardware and software projects and products.
  • Develop interactive, performance-based, hands-on instructor-led training courses.
  • Edit and create technical illustrations.
  • Review and edit technical documents and training materials as directed.
  • Manage assignments and documentation submittals according to defined quality, cost, and deliverable requirements.
  • Follow ISO processes as required.
  • Document submittals and weekly activities following departmental procedures.
Qualifications
Required Education, Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in either a technical communications or engineering field or equivalent experience
  • Instructional design certification or equivalent experience
  • 2-3 years related experience writing technical manuals or training materials
  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Visio
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills related to technical topics
  • Portfolio of work samples required
 
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in transit industry or strong technical aptitude working with electromechanical and /or microprocessor-based systems
  • Basic proficiency using Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat and FrameMaker
  • Ability to edit and create line drawings
  • Training delivery experience
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%
