Contract Technical Writer (8-12 weeks) – Syracuse NY

Our client located in Syracuse NY is looking for a Contract Technical Writer for an 8-12 week assignment.

Duties:

- Research and write technical literature required for the sale, installation, and operation of a variety of

   commercial products. 

- Editing and writing technical publications according to department style manual and standards;

   gathering information from sources in Marketing and Engineering; evaluating data and artwork; and

   reviewing proofs for accuracy.


Education and Experience:

- BA/BS in English, Communications, Technical Writing or Engineering.

- 3+ years experience in writing technical manuals; working knowledge of electronic publishing and

   graphics production (FrameMaker experience required).

- Must be able to work onsite at the client location in Syracuse NY.

Contract Technical Writer through Mindex Technologies, Rochester NY

Mindex Technologies, a Rochester TOP 100 company, is looking to hire a Technical Writer on a contract basis.  The selected candidate should have greater than 5 years of Technical Writing experience, have a passion for learning new things and a proven track record of coming up to speed in different business & technology verticals.  A financial background is a plus.

  • Knowledge in the cataloging and use of knowledge base systems and knowledge management practices
  • Working knowledge of tagging for optimized search engine results
  • RightAnswers platform experience preferred but not required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, desktop publishing and illustration, and sound editing.
  • Experience with content developers, subject matter experts, and architects for drafting, documenting publishing technology standards
  • Basic web page design and creation required
  • Understanding of good relational database structure and principles of normalization. Experience writing SQL statements and expertise in Microsoft Access.
  • Experience authoring in HTML and XML.
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Audition, with some experience in Flash.
  • Some experience and knowledge of 4GL and web languages such as .NET, Visual Basic, Java, JSP, ASP.NET preferred
  • Administrative knowledge of and experience with Wiki engines
  • Experience documenting technical customer and developer materials
  • Ability to design, implement, and maintain wiki namespaces and pages
  • Ability to migrate legacy documents to wiki

Department Description

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations is strategically critical to the mission and goals of RIT. We are a team-oriented, high-energy environment that works with all areas of the university to increase the involvement of alumni and other friends in the life of RIT. Our primary goal is to maximize fundraising opportunities and alumni involvement on behalf of the university.

Brief Description

The Executive Director of Communications and New Media is responsible for crafting and coordinating the communication messages and execution plans for the Division of Development and Alumni Relations.

Detailed Description

The Executive Director’s work encompasses external communication with primary constituents of alumni, donors, and prospects, along with internal communication within the Division. Communication strategies involve all vehicles including, but not limited to, Web, alumni online community, direct mail, printed proposals and development collateral materials, invitations, videos, speech writing, and social media. This professional serves as a leader of the Division, but is also a hands-on contributor to the work of the team.

Positions reporting to the Executive Director include: Director of Development Communication; Senior Associate Director of the Fund for RIT; Electronic Communications Specialist; Web Development Specialist. A part-time Graphic Designer and student workers complete the team.

Major Responsibilities : Serves as a member of the Division’s Leadership Team, working collaboratively with colleagues in support of the mission of the Division and of the university. Coordinates and guides the work of the six-member communications team, encouraging consistent messaging, concept development, and collaboration across functions. Hires, trains, manages, and mentors permanent, temporary and student employees.

Develops metrics for and tracks progress toward communication objectives. Works collaboratively with the university’s Chief Communications Officer and other communication professionals across campus. Personally plans and implements strategies focused on electronic outreach to alumni, including a monthly e-newsletter; regional chapter, college-focused, reunion and alumni benefits announcements; Fund for RIT solicitations in coordination with Fund Executive Director; surveys; and correspondence related to Institute objectives.

Supports the communication requirements for all fundraising and donor stewardship activities. Manages special communication initiatives for the President or Vice President as requested. These may include development of an annual report, President’s Letter, economic impact report, or the like. Oversees the development and maintenance of all Division of Development and Alumni Relations Web sites and e-commerce initiatives. Manages, in coordination with the Office of the Vice President, the internal monthly electronic newsletter Tiger Talk . Serves on the editorial board of RIT: The University Magazine and has direct oversight of the Class Notes section of the publication. Serves as a liaison to the Alumni Association Board of Directors and facilitates Communications Committee meetings.

Process Documentation Analyst through Genuent (Contract) – Macedon (Rochester NY area)

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer with an understanding of manufacturing technologies and experience writing for manufacturing processes, specifically in the food processing / packaging industry.

 

The analyst’s task would be to standardize manuals on the production floor, forms, etc.  The source information would be gathered from existing documentation and augmented by interviewing local Subject Matter Experts.

The successful candidate will possess the desired manufacturing-based authoring experience, as well as demonstrated skills with common of the shelf software packages (such as MS Word, MS Visio, Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Acrobat), and experience developing technical graphics material / illustrations via digital photography, screen captures, or lineart.

The position will require a great deal of self-direction and independent action to formulate a strategy for building the final deliverables. The analyst must be able to self-manage their time and activities on this project.

This is a contract assignment, currently outlooked at six months, although this term may be adjusted by client need.
