Meet your STC Rochester Council Candidates

STC Rochester members will receive an email ballot containing voting instructions on Monday, May 14, from Electionbuddy. Each email will contain a voting key specific to each member. All voting is confidential. The election is open from 12:01 AM, Monday, May 14 through 11:59 PM, Sunday, May 27.

It’s important that you vote in this election. Unlike previous years, we have a contested position: program manager. Your vote will decide which of the two candidates will serve in that position on the 2012-2013 STC Rochester Council.

President

Stephany Fuchs

Stephany is a senior member of STC and has served the STC Rochester as Vice President, Recording Secretary, and Membership Manager. She has also volunteered on the Spectrum planning committee for several years and as a judge in the local technical publications competition. Stephany has been a Technical Communicator for almost 15 years and currently works at REDCOM as a Senior Technical Writer where she is responsible for technical publications and training development. Stephany has a B.A. in English from the University of Dayton.

Vice President (vote for 2 candidates)

Lori Meyer

Lori Meyer is a technical communicator with more than 25 years of experience designing, writing, and editing software documentation and online user assistance. She is currently a senior technical writer in Cupertino, California. A former resident of the Rochester area, Lori kept her membership in the Rochester Chapter of STC when she relocated to California. Lori is a member of eight STC chapters and five SIGs. She currently serves as membership manager of the Rochester chapter, as co-manager of the STC Technical Editing Special Interest Group, and as a member of the STC Community Affairs Outreach and Membership Committees. She also volunteers for the Carolina, East Bay, Palm Beaches, and Northeast Ohio chapters. In 2009, Lori received the STC Distinguished Chapter Service Award, and in 2012 was named an STC Associate Fellow.

Wendy Barnhart Ross

Wendy Barnhart Ross is a Technical Writer with 15 years of combined experience in Technical Writing, Technical Newsletter Writing and Editing, Curriculum Writing, Employee Communications, and Grant and Graduate-Level Writing.

Wendy currently works for Bosch Security Systems as a Senior Technical Writer. There, she writes installation and operation documents, end user documents, online help, and more for commercial security hardware and software components. She is also responsible for developing and updating department procedures, and training and mentoring all new Technical Writers including international writers. Wendy assigns and tracks small and year-long projects for 3 writers in addition to her own work, and is ultimately responsible for the quality and consistency of all deliverables from all department writers.

For the past 7 years, Wendy served as an officer for the Western Wayne Art Group, holding positions including Publicity Chairman, a position for which she developed posters and program artwork, and wrote all publicity for local news media.

Wendy holds a B.A. in History from Nazareth College, and earned an M.A. in History from the University of Buffalo.

Treasurer

Rita Cronise

Rita Cronise is an instructional design consultant, wife of an ultra-marathon runner, mother of a freshman interactive game designer at RIT, and settling in to the role of Treasurer of STC Rochester after two years. She believes in the power of people learning from others who share common experiences with a passion for starting and growing communities of practice. She says STC is one of the best communities of practice she’s ever participated in and belonged to. She is optimistic about the technical communication profession and the Rochester chapter of STC.

Recording Secretary

James A. Locke IV

James A. Locke IV is an experienced manufacturing and mechanical systems integrator, sales and social media marketer, and customer service provider. He has strong ties to the Rochester community, and is passionate about design, technology, media, and communication.Currently he is pursuing a career in the technical communication industry. Jim volunteers with the Eastman Young Professionals, and George

Eastman House Legacy Committee, and is an avid photographer, nature enthusiast, adventurer, and life long learner, he enjoys taking art classes, attending lectures, and learning how to make chocolate. Jim is enthusiastic about the opportunity to connect with local professionals, and volunteer with the STC Rochester chapter.

Program Manager (vote for one candidate)

Jackie Paterson

Jackie Paterson has been a Sr. Technical Writer, Instructional Designer and Webmaster for more than 17 years in the Rochester area. She has been privileged to work for 4 Fortune 500 companies with more than 12 years in the telecommunications industry. Jackie graduated from St. John Fisher College with an Interdisciplinary Degree in Communications and Business, and a Professional Certificate from R.I.T. in Technical Communications. Her hobbies include riding her horses, gardening, traveling, rehabbing houses, and spending time with friends.

“After serving as the Program Manager for most of 2011/2012, I am eager to put lessons-learned into practice next year. There is such a wealth of talent and experience in the Rochester STC community and they deserve a professional association that is on the forefront of new trends, tools, and technologies. My goal for next year’s program is to plan more interactive meetings, more destinations of interest, and more career promotion programs. Also, I want to reach out to the technical communication departments in our local corporations and keep them regularly apprised of the programs that are available, and do a better job of inviting students to the meetings. We need more visibility as an organization that adds value. If this plan appeals to you, please vote for me and give me a chance to enhance your membership through the use of programs. Lisa Pietrangeli

Lisa Pietrangeli is a Managing Partner and Director of Client Solutions at ThirtySix Software. At ThirtySix, Lisa specializes in working with clients to develop customized content development strategies. Lisa brings over 11 years of experience to ThirtySix Software, having worked extensively with companies around the world, helping them to streamline their content development and localization processes. Before joining ThirtySix Software, Lisa was Director of Global Client Solutions at Language Intelligence, where she worked with clients to develop internationalization strategies for all stages of the content development process, from authoring through to translation. Her extensive experience at Language Intelligence covers everything from project management, resource selection and management, to business development, localization consulting and managing the localization PM staff. Her experience, combined with her analytical skills, make Lisa an ideal partner with whom to evaluate content development processes and tailor solutions for organizations of all types and sizes. In addition to her unique professional experiences, Lisa holds degrees in Art History, Spanish, Italian, and American Sign Language. Lisa has also spent time living and studying in Italy. Lisa has served the Rochester chapter as a Spectrum committee member, Member at Large, and Vice President/Spectrum Co-chair.

“As Program Manager, I think offering a variety of program types will allow more people to participate and provide the chapter with more exposure. There will be a combination of live programs, social events, business-focused networking, and web-based programs. It is critical that Programs and PR work closely together to get more people interested and aware of programs being offered both in and outside of the membership circle.”

Education Manager

Ben Woelk

Ben Woelk is Policy and Awareness Analyst for the RIT Information Security Office. He is responsible for security awareness communications, training programs, and policy development. Ben has authored a number of articles on information security for non-technical users and is adjunct faculty at RIT in Professional and Technical Communication and in Networking, Security and Systems Administration. Current activities include leveraging social media for security awareness, co-chairing the Awareness and Training Working Group in the EDUCAUSE Higher Education Information Security Council, and Outreach Team Lead for the STC Community Affairs Committee. Ben is the immediate past president of STC Rochester and has also served as Vice President, Program Manager, and Webmaster.

Membership Manager

Mary Elise Dedicke

Mary Elise has been a technical writer in the Capital District (Albany/Schenectady/Troy) since 1993. After obtaining an M.S. in Technical Communication at RPI, she began her career at GE Plastics and GE Power, then moved to financial services at KeyBank and Bank of America. Since 2006, she has been working at Pitney Bowes Software (formerly MapInfo) creating software documentation and video tutorials. A Senior Member of STC, she has been a member of the Tech Valley chapter of STC and served as its Vice President and Treasurer, and most recently on the STC Rochester Council as a Member at Large.

Doug Eaton

“STC Rochester Rookie of the Year” Doug Eaton managed the chapter’s Summit Awards program in 2011. He has also served as President and Program Director of STC’s CNY Chapter.

Doug develops Help systems and training for Saab Sensis Corporation’s Air Traffic Management business in East Syracuse, NY. His work has won an Award for Excellence in STC’s International Online Communications Competition (2009), three awards for excellence in STC-Rochester’s competitions, an APEX Award for Excellence, and an NYS Public Relations Association Award of Excellence. Doug is currently Member at Large for STC Rochester.

Kelly Schrank

Kelly Schrank has been a technical editor and writer for 18 years; she is currently a medical editor for a major pharmaceutical company. A Senior Member of STC, she is a past STC chapter president, treasurer, secretary, and newsletter editor and an active member of the Technical Editing SIG. She is working on her MA in Technical Communication.

New TC Professional membership level now available to recent graduates

If you’re a recent graduate, STC’s New TC Professional membership category offers you a chance to join STC at significant savings. This new membership level, for those who have graduated within the last three years, has annual dues of $160.00. It includes one STC chapter and one Special Interest Group (SIG), along with all other STC membership benefits: online access to Intercom and Technical Communication publications, free archived education seminars, access to the My STC Network, and education discounts.  All new members also receive the 2012 STC Salary Database free when it is published in July 2012.

End-of-year announcements: 2012 membership renewal, survey, and other news

Hello, STC Rochester chapter members,

I hope you’re enjoying the holiday season. As we bring December to a close, I would like to share some important information about your STC membership and upcoming events.Most important of all — we want you with us in 2012! Many of you have already renewed your membership, and for that, our sincere thanks. If you haven’t renewed, there’s still time to do so, which will enable you to continue benefiting from membership in a friendly, dynamic community that is working hard to bring you the value you expect and deserve.
