Documentation Specialist/QA Tester – SofTrek Corporation, Amherst (Buffalo Area) NY

Job Summary

SofTrek Corporation has an immediate opening for a Documentation Specialist/QA Tester. SofTrek develops and markets ClearView CRM, fundraising software that helps nonprofits grow relationships with constituents and raise money.

As the Documentation Specialist/QA Tester, you will create documentation (including release notes) that helps clients and staff understand and use ClearView CRM, taking into consideration the knowledge and skill base of these audiences.

You will test new versions of ClearView CRM before release to verify/assure it functions as expected and to identify any defects and/or unexpected outcomes based on your knowledge of client needs. In this role, you will work closely with business analysts, software engineers, project managers, a UI designer, and trainers. Creativity is a key part of this job, as is an ability to be flexible in juggling day-to-day responsibilities.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Design, create, test, distribute, and manage documentation and release notes using a variety of delivery vehicles (web publication, knowledge bases, video, etc.).
  • Develop plans and schedules to manage the production of user documentation in accordance with minor and major product releases.
  • Run alpha testing (apart from user-acceptance and automated testing) on ClearView CRM to determine capabilities of new features and other aspects of the product in new releases.
  • Test software in different environments, including web and mobile.
  • Write and report on findings according to established processes, providing objective feedback to software development and project teams.
  • Attend sprint planning and review meetings, as well as other key product development meetings, to understand the scope of projects and the status of development throughout the entire process.
  • Understand client requirements for software use.
  • Consult with engineers, BAs and marketing to resolve UI text issues.
  • Continuously research “best practices” to document software products, and recommend tools, approaches, styling, delivery vehicles for all product documentation.
  • Evaluate user experience and effectiveness of user documents to determine continuous improvement plans.
  • Work closely with software engineering team to ensure product “help” documentation is readily available and consistent in user experience and access.
  • Work on multiple projects at one time.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, information systems, or other pertinent subject, or related experience with an emphasis on software documentation production and testing.
  • Minimum five years of software documentation writing experience producing user manuals, quick reference guides, FAQs, “how to” documents, and/or videos.
  • Strong analytical capabilities.
  • Knowledge of how overall UX should inform software performance.
  • Proven ability to effectively design various user documentation deliverables, including visual design, layout, styling, illustrations, and textual formatting.
  • High level of expertise in industry-standard documentation tools for web and video production (Flare, Joomla, Mimic, Vimeo, etc.).
  • Capabilities in HTML and screen-capture video production a plus.
  • Ability to grasp complex software, learn quickly and work within tight deadlines.
  • Strong written/verbal communications.
  • Independent work-style, with a strong desire to help users become more effective at using software products.
