Tech Writers without Borders and Using Your Skills for Non-Profits

January 26, 2017 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us from the comfort of your warm home or office for a webinar with Johanne Lavallée and Nancy Larbl. For those in the Buffalo area, there will be a viewing party at Buff State; further details are available when you “purchase” that ticket.

If you are looking to learn new job skills outside of your workplace or in order to improve your job search, while acquiring experience on a more international and multicultural level, consider Tech Writers Without Borders (TWWB).

In this session, Johanne Lavallée will introduce you TWWB and present a new member’s experience of it. She’ll discuss what she got out of this and what she expects to give to it as well.

The core of the meeting will be given by Nancy Larbi, founding member of TWWB. Nancy’s presentation offers concrete lessons for managing cross-cultural communication and draws on decades of experience living abroad and working for non-profits and for-profits. Establishing long-term relationships with an international clientele requires moving beyond language barriers and addressing cultural challenges. Beyond personal reward, being more culturally aware can make technical communicators client success advocates.

Johanne Lavallée has been a technical communicator for 20 years in Québec, Canada and used her skills in volunteering for fair trade, environment, and organic farming. She is co-organizer of her Quebec Technical Writers club and Secretary of the STC Rochester chapter.

Nancy Larbi has been a technical communicator in the nonprofit world at UNESCO for 20 years and in the for-profit world at SAS for 16 years. She has worked and lived in a foreign country for 20 years, and she was exposed to another foreign country and culture and language for 28 years through marriage. Trained in technical writing at The American University in Paris, Nancy is also a French literature scholar with a Master’s degree from both the University of Paris VII and Columbia University in the City of New York. Nancy is a Certified Professional Technical Writer – Expert™ (CPTC) by the Society for Technical Communication (STC), Board member of the STC France Chapter, and founding member of Tech Writers Without Borders.
