Grant Writer Contract Position at Hochstein

Hochstein School of Music seeks to engage a part-time grant writer,
on a contract basis, to develop foundation and corporate grant requests.


  • Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit and manage grant proposals to foundations and corporations
  • Conduct research on prospective funders, cultivate relationships with institutional grant-making organizations, initiate and maintain communications with prospects and funders
  • Write and submit letters of inquiry, proposals and reports; coordinate site visits as needed
  • Work with Hochstein staff members to set priorities for funding requests and develop support for various Hochstein programs and services
  • Maintain detailed records of contacts, activity, deadlines, and other pertinent information
  • Reports to the Director of Development/Communications

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research
  • Familiarity with local and regional funders
  • Strong interest in the arts and education preferred


  • The ideal candidate must have at least a B.A. degree and three years grant writing experience for arts, cultural, or educational organizations
  • Demonstrated success in grant seeking
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
