Job description

The Medical Editor is a professional with scientific or medical editing expertise and will be responsible for copyediting scientific content, presentations, graphics, visual aids, and other communications according to established standards and project style guides.

Major responsibilities

  • Edit, reference, revise, and adapt content of written medical materials, in preparation for final publication.
  • Integrate editing best practices with compliance and regulatory guidelines to ensure relevant and appropriate responses are provided to customers.
  • Track the status of documents being developed or updated by the writing team.

The Medical Editor might also be called upon to:

  • Enforce standards for the company’s publications and (in consultation with writers) for a particular project.
  • Assist writers in the development of material, particularly its logical order and structure.
  • Advise writers on the appropriate use of graphics, wording of headings, figure and table captions, page breaks, and index and glossary entries.
  • Provide whatever levels of edit are necessary.

Desired skills and experience

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in language arts, communications, or science
  • 1-3 years experience in medical, scientific, or technical editing
  • Demonstrated expertise in technical communications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Preferred background

  • Knowledge and experience with the AMA Manual of Style.
  • Experience editing using Track Changes in Word and communicating with remote writers
  • Knowledge of FDA requirements
  • Ability to apply Regulatory and Compliance guidelines to scientific content
