Position Description and Required Skills

The Technical Communication Specialist (Technical Writer) is responsible for research, creation, updating and archiving of documentation. Create documentation from technically complicated sources and transform into accurate and cost-effective deliverables in plain English. Use established content development processes and writing standards to ensure quality and client satisfaction. The specialist writes for a global audience, works independently or on teams, and multi-tasks to complete multiple projects. The specialist develops skills with advanced authoring tools, processes, and standards to stay current in their profession and with industry standards.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop documentation by interviewing and working with subject matter experts and in accordance with departmental processes and writing standards.
• Ensure the quality of the content through reviews and validation procedures.
• Work with technical illustrator(s) to develop graphical content for the documentation.
• Provide input to the project schedule by communicating the time required to deliver the documentation (both English and localized if needed).
• Monitor the hours spent against the project budget and communicate anticipated overages, changes in schedules, changes in scope.
• Adjust priorities and workload to meet changing schedules and scope.
• Develop content to optimize the localization process.
• Coordinate content deployment through formal, documented and regulated processes.
• Follow established procedures to archive source files in content management system.

Key/Critical Competencies

• Experience with Structured Framemaker (critical), InDesign (preferred), Acrobat Professional, MS Office suite.
• Working knowledge of the applications listed above, along with an understanding of topic-based authoring (DITA), deployment requirements, document control, strong process understanding.
• Understanding/experience with the medical market, products, and regulations.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments with deadlines (as an individual or team contributor).
• Experience writing for multiple, global audiences to create and deliver appropriate levels of detail.
• Understanding of illustrations/graphics and engineering design graphics.
• Ability to provide simple instructions from a complex source with text and graphics.
• Understanding of the concepts of content re-use (critical) and translation memory (preferred).
• Ability to handle the full scope of a writing project – planning, writing, review, approval, content, deployment—with minimal supervision.
• Technical skills & competencies in the areas that you are supporting (e.g., must know terminology, technical concepts, etc. for both hardware & software, etc).

Education and Experience

• A BS/BA in English, Journalism, Communication or related field with a strong emphasis on writing.
• 3-5 years directly relevant experience in writing software and hardware instructions in a medical device or pharmaceutical setting.
• Experience in a technical position – mechanical, electrical, software – or service technician (preferred).
