Technical Writer – Engineering, Gleason, Rochester, NY

Job Summary:

The Technical Writer prepares instruction and training manuals and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information to customers.  The Technical Writer will work with Engineering and Product Qualification subject matter experts to understand the function of the machines, and document the operation and maintenance instructions in accordance with Gleason documentation standards.Job Responsibilities:

  • Determine the clearest and most logical way to present information and instructions for greatest reader comprehension.
  • Write and edit technical information accordingly.
  • Prepare or commission graphics and illustrations to elaborate on or complement technical writing.
  • Meet with subject matter experts in order to ensure that specialized topics are appropriately addressed and discussed.
  • Collaborate with translators as necessary to convert writing into a variety of languages.
  • Revise, edit, or update instructions, technical information, and frequently asked questions as necessary.
  • Create, adapt, and follow project schedules and deadlines.
  • Remain up-to-date on technological and product developments as well as universal specifications relevant to the industry.

Required Skills: Technical Documentation Skills

Software Skills:

  • Frame Maker: maintain and update existing templates for new layouts.
  • Photoshop: use warp tools to change image perspective.
  • Adobe Illustrator: maintain and modify layout templates.
  • Oxygen: create topics and DITA maps, relationship tables, content references, and book maps.
  • Xdocs CMS: create and maintain filter sets and publishing profiles. Understand CMAdmin functions and use translation module effectively.
  • Creo Illustrate: create exploded views, move components, and change colors in images. Combine models in Creo for more accurate model representation.

Business System Skills:

  • Network/Sales Order Functions: understand how to review sales order BOM. Attend TRM meetings when necessary.
  • Dashboards: understand priorities and update promise dates in dashboard.
  • ITL’s/OSARs: assign ITL’s as necessary. Resolve and close ITL’s without help.  Active member of an OSAR team.

Machine/Process Knowledge:

  • Machine Processes: understand chamfering, deburring, and automation processes and how they are set up and used during machine operation.
  • Operator Instruction/Maintenance Manual: work mainly without supervision to create new content and document procedures for existing machine models.
  • Mechanical and Controls Aptitude: describe maintenance and setup procedures and has knowledge of major machine subsystems and assemblies.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-5 years’ experience with machine tools preferred or equivalent experience with Gleason machines and general technical writing knowledge.
