Technical Writer, PostProcess Technologies, Inc – Buffalo, NY

Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create clear and concise QuickStart Guides for our machines, including the proper and effective use of our consumables, that allow technicians to quickly and effectively operate our post-printing solutions. The QuickStart Guides are a significantly condensed version of our Operator Manuals.
  • Create Troubleshooting Guides that cover the 10 – 15 most common questions (i.e., FAQs)/issues that technicians experience with our equipment.
  • Create in-depth Operator Manuals that provide comprehensive instructions on all aspects of our equipment to help ensure technicians are fully utilizing all features of our solutions.
  • Create in-depth Maintenance Manuals that will be used by maintenance personnel at our customers that are responsible for keeping the machines running and in tip-top shape.
  • Team closely with Engineering to gain an in-depth understanding of how our technology and solutions work to ensure accuracy of product descriptions and operation.
  • Ensure all Customer Documentation has a consistent look & feel and style continuity.
  • Utilize photographs, drawings, diagrams, animation and charts to increase technician/maintenance personnel understanding.
  • Ensure technical language is easy to understand by non-engineering personnel. Explain scientific and technical ideas in simple language.
  • Produce electronic documentation and videos as the second phase of our Customer Documentation strategy.
  • Develop an overall schedule to produce the initial versions of the documents, determine the number of documents that can be produced per week, and team with Sales to prioritize the list based on customer requirements.
  • Call select customers to get feedback on the effectiveness of the documentation and utilize this input to continually improve the Guides and Manuals.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Superb technical writing skills.
  • Prior experience writing technical customer documentation for industrial machines and/or equipment.
  • Strong understanding of electro-mechanical devices and software.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Preferably a member of the Society for Technical Communication.
  • Prior experience in the Additive Manufacturing industry is a plus

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, history or other discipline that required extensive writing. A candidate with an Engineering Degree would also be acceptable as long as the individual can translate complex technical information into easy-to-understand instructions for mainly non-degreed technicians.
  • 7+ years of technical writing experience.
  • Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Google Docs and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign and/or other screen-capture software to ensure a professional and pleasing layout.
  • Ability to grasp complex technical concepts quickly and write concise documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A diverse portfolio of work to demonstrate authored and edited content.
  • The ability to adjust styles as needed depending on audience and requirements.
  • Grant writing experience is a plus.
